How much does a website cost for a small business?

Website prices vary hugely. Here is what actually drives the cost, so you can compare quotes fairly.

By Kyle Butler, KyDesign

Why quotes vary so much

Ask three designers for a website quote and you may get three very different numbers. That is usually because each one is quoting for a different thing. One may be quoting for a template with your logo added, another for a fully designed site with copywriting and SEO set-up included.

The best way to compare is to understand what drives the price.

The main factors

These are the things that make the biggest difference to the cost of a website:

  • Number of pages and unique page layouts
  • Custom design versus an adapted template
  • Features such as booking, quote forms, portals or integrations
  • eCommerce: product count, payments and delivery rules
  • Who writes the content and supplies the photography
  • SEO set-up, redirects and migration from an old site

Hidden costs to ask about

Ask about hosting, domain renewal, plugin licences, security updates and how changes are charged after launch. A cheaper build can become more expensive over a few years if every small update is billed separately.

Think about return, not just price

A website is a sales tool. If it brings in a handful of extra jobs each month, a better built site usually pays for itself. Focus on whether the site will be easy for customers to use, quick to load and visible in Google for the searches that matter to you.

Getting an accurate quote

The more detail you share, the more accurate the quote. A short brief covering your goals, the pages you need, any features and your timescale will help any designer give you a fair price. Our quote form walks you through exactly those questions.
